Research report – Focus on Maay speakers in Banadir

In collaboration with Minority Rights Group International, HISA, JVDC and MCAN, we explored how well Maay speakers understood information about polio vaccination. We found that overall knowledge about polio vaccines is low, in part because information is usually available in Mahaatiri. Maay speakers often do no understand polio vaccination campaigns.

This increases the risk of marginalization, and can reduce people’s trust in the vaccines. Even when information was available in Maay, people struggled to understand key health terminology. Organizations need to reduce language barriers in health information to make sure people understand what vaccines are, how they help, and where to get them.
